The Sopranos is the reason they invented cable. No pulled punches, no advertisers to please, and no compromising the adult subject matter
just rich storytelling. The third seasons opener wastes no time in delivering the goods, focusing on both Livias death and Tonys racism.
The only truly false note comes during an awkwardly contructed scene with recently deceased Nancy Marchand, obviously using computers and old footage. Was it neccessary to go through all of this effort for an ineffective throwaway scene? In the final analysis, though, the only competition The Sopranos has is itself. Mistakes or no, this is the best show on television.
