The best and most realistic gritty cop show since Homicide is back, and more devious than ever. If you’ve never watched The Wire, it centers on police office politics in Baltimore, where the criminals are infinitely more dedicated and driven than their lazy, petty, pass-the-crab-legs law enforcement counterparts. Here, it’s about climbing the latter and not giving a shit about protecting and serving anything but your own career. Then there’s Detective James McNulty (Dominic West), whose purpose is to play pain-in-the-ass to his shiftless superiors, even if he has to work overtime to do it. This season begins with him out of homicide and on the marine unit, patrolling the harbor in freezing temperatures, bored, and looking for revenge.

Almost all the guys and gals are back in much different situations since season one’s fallout finale. Drug dealers are in prison, cops have been demoted, and Baltimore is still a corrupt cesspool. Unlike last season, which was just about drugs, this year involves the shipyard and longshoremen…and drugs. The reintroduction of the characters unfolds slowly over the first few episodes, highlighted by the amplified role of Stringer Bell (Idris Elba), who’s taken over the drug business since his boss was busted. A word of caution, though: The Wire’s a meal at first, since it’s building a complex story that’ll last all season. If you’re expecting lots of action off the bat or don’t have the patience for its twists and turns, this ain’t for you, rookie.
