Top TV Picks: May 16th to May 22nd, 2011
This Week: Manny Pacquiao gets revenge on Tosh.0, people bounce off of big balls in Wipeout, and Aerosmith rock The Simpsons.
There’s a lot of TV options to choose from. Too much for any one person to completely monitor, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to do our best to sift through all the listings and figure out what you should be watching every week…with all the highlights, lowlights, and guilty pleasures you can stand.
Monday, May 16
8:00 p.m. How I Met Your Mother(CBS)
The sixth season of the legen–wait for it–dary sitcom switched gears into serious when it dealt with daddy issues and infertility (though, to be fair, there was still plenty of familiar HIMYM hilarity, like the epic prank that was “The Exploding Meatball Sub.”) We’ll see how they wrap things up in the finale, which will feature a major turning point clue when Ted (Josh Radnor) acts as the Best Man at a very important, albeit mysterious, wedding. No matter what goes down, we’re sure Bob Saget will have something to say about it.

10:00 p.m. Tosh.0 (Comedy Central)
If you were more than a little underwhelmed with the way Manny Pacquiao cleaned Sugar Shane Moseley‘s clock to get the welterweight title earlier this month, you’ll want to tune in for the second season premiere of comedian Daniel Tosh’s viral video mock-fest. Not only will the champ be stopping by for a visit, he’s also going to lay right into Tosh…with his fists! Now that’s a web redemption.
Thursday, May 19
8:00 p.m. Wipeout(ABC)
There isn’t much more you can ask for from a television show than Wipeout, which has its spring season finale tonight. After all, it features legit funny announcers (ESPN’s John Anderson and the only man in the world who can rock a skunk spot, John Henson), a seriously hot–and also funny!– host (Jill Wagner) and nutter contestants willing to get pummeled by lots of crazy shit on obstacle course. It’s also the only show in prime time where you can watch people bounce off really big balls.
10:00 p.m. Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Back-to-back episodes of Parks and Rec makes us happier than Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) at a steakhouse with a leggy brunette. And while, sadly, it marks the end of the firing-on-all-cylinders third season, we’ll revel in the delight of an hour which includes Chris (Rob Lowe) dealing with a health problem (the microchip has been compromised!?!) and the return of Pawnee’s biggest little attraction, L’il Sebastian.
Saturday, May 21
9:00 p.m. Sinbad and the Minotaur (Syfy)
We can’t enough of Syfy’s made-for-TV movies, what with their super-plausible plots and dazzling special effects. This latest one follows the legendary fictitious sailor, whose high-seas adventures include stealing a relic from a sorcerer and finding a treasure on an island inhabited by a minotaur. Sold! Though, we do think there’s a bit of a wasted opportunity here. Rather than have actor Manu Bennett play Sinbad, why not up the unintentional hilarity ante and actually cast Sinbad?!

8:00 p.m. The Simpsons (Fox)
Brace yourselves for this one: Tonight marks the close of the 22nd season (!?!) of the greatest animated series of-all time (Yeah, yeah, the last few years have been sub-par. We get it. “Boo-urns” to you!) In this year’s finale, Ned Flanders dates Springfield’s town bicycle Edna Krabappel and Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer joins the long line of celebrities who have loaned their voice to the series.
The Silver Lining: Sunday, May 22
8:00 p.m. 2011 Billboard Music Awards (ABC)
Despite the fact that there’s a few reasons to tune in–namely so you can gawk at the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj–it’s still scheduled to last a butt-numbing three hours. Hosted by The Hangover: Part II star Ken Jeong at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, it could be just what you need to mindlessly watch before the weekend draws to a close. Then again, it could just as easily ruin your entire week ahead: Justin Bieber is nominated in eleven categories.
