With his spot-on impression of Star Jones and characters like the blaxploitation space traveler Astronaut Jones, Tracy Morgan almost makes Saturday Night Live worth watching. Unfortunately, an hour of stand-up is not the best platform for him, and One Mic is too repetitive to stay funny. Morgan starts out talking about the differences between growing up in the ghetto and stand-up stardom, but he doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know: He used to be poor, but now he’s well off and everyone wants a piece of him—how unusual. The other topics Morgan tackles are played out as well; his rants on masturbation and marriage are the only ones that generate genuine laughs. Even when Morgan does try something different—toward the end he has a full-length response to Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone,” complete with backup singers—it rambles on too long, and the end comes long after it should. It has its moments, but overall, One Mic is just another Saturday Night Live comic proving it’s not so easy to step out of Lorne Michaels’s shadow.
