No matter how many times he mentions pot, “Rhymin’ Simon” doesn’t inspire the bright-eyed rebellion of his early days. While You’re the One isn’t his best live performance ever, it’s a solid mix of old and new pieces, and his songwriting still soars occasionally.
Songs like “Teacher” and “Hurricane Eye” are beautiful, but not much fun in concert. Simon clearly has more fun with classics like “Late in the Evening” and “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” and the vibe is infectious—the crowd is clearly with him when he’s playful, and respectfully silent when he gets misty and patriarchal.
Somewhere under that hat, just back of that receding hairline, that sunny, strumming hippie is still lurking. He might not move too fast these days, but he still knows how to groove.
