Google Wants to Help You Find the Loch Ness Monster

This company is getting really serious about fun.

This just in: Google still has a ton of disposable income. Today, on the anniversary of the Surgeon’s Photograph (above), the most famous (fake) picture of Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, Google Maps is offering users the opportunity to take a virtual tour of Scotland’s largest, murkiest, and most famous lake. Forget street view — this is Loch view. To help release your inner cryptid-hunter, Google mounted a 260-degree camera on a boat in the loch, allowing you both circumferential views of the craggy lake plus some underwater photography. In partnership with Adrien Shine, head of the Loch Ness and Morar Project, Google is giving you the chance to have a sighting of the world’s most famous monster. (Tomorrow, you can go back to using Google for unit conversions, NFL trivia, and naked movie star pictures.)
