Channing Tatum is All In for “Foxcatcher”

The leading man deserves to be taken seriously. No one saw that coming.

Like it or not, Channing Tatum is here to stay. And you won’t just be seeing him in roles that showcase his pecs (Magic Mike) and impressive ability to play dumb (21-22 Jump Street). With his role as a Cold War-era Olympic wrestler in this fall’s Foxcatcher, which is getting serious buzz following its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Tatum is out to prove he’s more than just a pretty face.

The movie, which also stars Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, tells the true story of mentally ill millionaire John du Pont (Carell) and his relationship with gold-medalist wrestler brothers, Mark and David Schultz (Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), the older of whom he murdered in 1996. The film co-stars Carell’s prosthetic nose, but won’t be funny, which is why it marks such a departure for Tatum, whose best work has been in relatively light movies – excluding Side Effects, in which he didn’t do much aside from getting dead.

It may seem hard to believe that Tatum, who got his first big break in the 2006 dance movie Step Up, could have any serious acting chops. That’s precisely why his career will be on the line when Foxcatcher hits theaters on November 14. If he succeeds, he’ll have prestige. If he fails, he’ll just have millions.
