Wes Craven, the Scariest Man in Hollywood, Has Died at 76

See you in our nightmares, Wes.

Film director Wes Craven, best known for the legendary Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, passed away Sunday evening at age 76, Reuters reports. The prolific filmmaker has suffered from brain cancer for the past several years.

“It is with deep sadness we inform you that Wes Craven passed away,” the family said in a statement to Reuters. “Our hearts are broken.”

Despite his ailing health, Craven had been hard at work over the three years.  “The Girl in the Photographs,” a new film by Craven focused on two serial killers who stalk a young woman through arty photographs in a small down, will premiere at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival in September.

Craven has left an indelible mark on the horror genre in the three decades since “A Nightmare on Elm Street” first premiered in theaters across America.  Watch this fantastic interview with Craven on what it’s like to work on a horror set and his philosophy of filmmaking and pay tribute to a wonderful, visionary director. Rest in peace, Craven: we’ll see you in our nightmares.
