NWA Could be Heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The rap supergroup likely got a boost from their hit movie, Straight Outta Compton.

NWA could be going from Straight Outta Compton to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The old-school rap supergroup, which has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity thanks to last summer’s hit biopic , is among the nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.

Other contenders include Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, The Cars, The Smiths, Yes, Nine Inch Nails, Janet Jackson, Chaka Khan, Chic, Los Lobos, Steve Miller, the J.B.’s and The Spinners.

That’s a fairly diverse group of artists, but none have the cultural momentum enjoyed by Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, the late Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella. After all, the Straight Outta Compton movie did so well, there’s already a sequel in the works.

The top vote-getters will be announced in December and inducted next April at a ceremony in New York City. HBO will broadcast the glitzy event later in the year. To be eligible for the 2016 Hall of Fame class, artists must have released their first single or album in 1990 or earlier.

Last year’s Hall of Fame inductees included Lou Reed, Green Day,  Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble and Ringo Starr.
