On Monday night, a guy at a charity event for DC Central Kitchen paid $1,000 to eat a single slice of ham off Padma Lakshmi. That may sound like a lot of money, but you should know that it was really fancy Spanish ham called Jamón Ibérico, which roughly translates to “cured pork for the 1 percenters.” Also, Padma flippin’ Lakshmi was his serving vessel, and even though he was only allowed to nibble it off her collar bone, as opposed to more prime ham-eating real estate, like the stomach or thigh, it’s still better than how we eat ours: out of a can, seasoned with the salty tears of our loneliness. So: well done, guy who paid a grand to eat ham off Padma! You’re an inspiration to us all.
