How badass is the totally bare-bones, extremely track-ready 2014 Camaro Z/28? Let’s put it this way: air conditioning is optional. In a world where you can get a GPS, electric seats, and multiple speakers in even the most bargain-basement Kia, this brand new muscle car is a throwback to a whole different era. “As the ultimate track-capable Camaro, this car restores the mission of the original Z/28,” says Mark Reuss, the president GM North America. “The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight, high-revving, dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers for track use; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight.” So how did Chevy manage to Jenny Craig the pudge out of this machine? They lost everything that didn’t make the car move faster. There is no spare tire. There’s no carpeting in the trunk. There are no foglights. The designers even wanted to get rid of the audio system completely but, as Al Oppenheiser, Camaro’s chief engineer, explained to us as we ogled the beast, “We had to keep a single speaker for the seat-belt chime to meet safety requirements.” Long story short, this is a car that’s more at home on the track than on the streets.

The Z/28 won’t be available until later in the year, so, in the meantime, please enjoy the wonderful sounds of its massive 7-liter V8.
