The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Will Continue, But Without Rooney Mara

Or Daniel Craig. Or David Fincher. Or Stieg Larsson.

A Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follow-up is in the works at Sony, but the next adaptation — of the fourth book in the Millennium series,The Girl in the Spider’s Web — will look a lot different than the 2011 film starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

The studio is in early talks with Steven Knight (Burnt) to adapt the novel, which became an international best seller after it was published in September.

Sources say that neither Rooney Mara, who nabbed a best actress Oscar nomination for Dragon Tattoo, nor Daniel Craig will be back, and the studio sees the new book as an opportunity to start the franchise over. Ditto for Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher, who is not expected to return to Salander universe.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Craig would not have been involved in any Dragon Tattoo sequel despite being motioned for two,  because the studio is mandated to keep any sequels at a lower budget than the 2011 film, and Craig wanted a raise.

It’s not clear why Mara wouldn’t be reprising her role as Lisbeth Salander, as this past February she discussed her regret about her feeling that a Dragon Tattoo sequel wouldn’t happen. Who knows —maybe she’d only have been interested in adaptations of Larsson’s trilogy.

Cue the listicles about who should replace Mara as the mysterious hacker.
