Insanity Alert: The UN Would Like You To Eat Bugs

High-protein beetle, anybody?

It’s true – according to this news report from the BBC, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization thinks we should all start eating insects. They give a lot of surprisingly compelling reasons as to why we should do this – the low environmental footprint of farming bugs, for example, as well as the high protein content of their – ugh – “meat.” And while it’s true that about a third of the world voluntarily chows down on stuff like caterpillars and moths, it seems like they’ve got a long way to go before they can convince the American public (or even the European public, if you exclude the French) to drop the hamburgers and pick up a nice juicy cricket kabob.

The UN acknowledges this, of course, hilariously blaming “consumer disgust” on the lack of bugs being served in Western restaurants. The thing is, it really doesn’t matter if they’re right: They could present us with all the proof in the world that an all-insect diet would be better for both ourselves and the planet, and they’ll only make us cling harder to our hot dogs. This is America, damn it! Doing things we don’t like just because they’re good for us goes against everything we believe in! In the meantime, we’ll pretend to consider it while watching this and weeping softly. Skip to 1m58s for the beetle meat!
