Pierce Brosnan on the Next James Bond: Let’s Stick to White Dudes For Now

The former 007 actor thinks the next Bond should — I mean “will” —  probably look like him. 

Pierce Brosnan played James Bond in four 007 movies between 1995 and 2002, and he sounds like he’s stuck in a time capsule regarding the future of the character.

The upcoming Spectre is rumored to be Daniel Craig’s last Bond movie, and there’s been nonstop speculation about who will take over as the spy who shagged everyone. And for the first time, fans are very enthusiastic about the possibility of making the franchise more diverse — perhaps by casting Idris Elba (YES, PLEASE) or even a woman as the next Bond.

But Brosnon’s like, nah.


“Anything is possible for sure, but I think he’ll be male and he’ll be white,” Brosnan told the Press Association. But lest you worry that Brosnan thinks he SHOULD be male and white, he offered this weak qualifier.

“There’s wonderful black actors out there who could be James Bond, and there’s no reason why you cannot have a black James Bond,” he said.

How about a woman?

Nope. That would just be taking it too far. “But a female James Bond, no, I think it has to be male. James Bond is a guy, he’s all male. His name is James, his name is James Bond,” he insisted.

His name is JAMES, guys. You can’t possibly change a character’s name in a fictional story, or give a female character a man’s name. That’s just not possible!

Unfortunately for Brosnan, one white male — who looks damn bloody good in a tux  — has squashed rumors he’ll be the next James Bond.

David Beckham, who has said he wanted to try his hand at film acting, said it would not be in a 007 film.

Asked about the rumors he could be tapped to replace Craig, Beckham told Good Morning Britain, “I’ve definitely not been contacted, I’m definitely not obviously up for doing something like that, but it’s nice to be linked I suppose.”

Spectre will hit theaters on November 6.
