Sam Mendes is Retiring from MI6

The director of Skyfall and the upcoming Spectre is calling it quits after this last Bond installment.

While it’s still uncertain whether Daniel Craig will continue on as Mr. Bond (rumors are floating around that the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill, will take the reigns) in the next film following November’s release of Spectre, we do know one thing for certain: the franchise is going to need a new director.

Sam Mendes, the man behind 2012’s Skyfall and other hits like American Beauty, Road to Perdition, and Revolutionary Road, has stated in an interview with BBC that “this is probably it” and he doesn’t think “he can go down that road again.” This is pretty disappointing news, whether you’re a fan of the franchise or simply just enjoys spending their time in a theater. Mendes swooped in and saved the Bond films after a disappointing Quantum of Solace, but it seems that the amount of work put into the film mirrors Joss Whedon’s take on the Avengers franchise, which just doesn’t seem to be worth it in the long run.

Even with the news, it doesn’t take away from the spectacle that will be Spectre. Led by an all-star cast of Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, and Monica Belluci, the film’s November 6th release couldn’t feel farther away. Not much is truly known about the film, aside from an ominous message that Bond receives, sending him on the hunt for (yet another) organization that is out to cause havoc.

While we sit and ponder who’s going to helm the next flick, as well as who’s going to be drinking that next martini (shaken, not stirred), take a look at the new trailer for Spectre and savor what might be Sam Mendes’ farewell to MI6 and their best agent.
