Clap your hands and say whoa. Get pumped for the season with cheerleaders on trampolines!

Tracey-

TEAM: Washington Redskins

Research shows that cheerleading can be very dangerous work. Are you prepared to suffer for your sport?

People think cheering is just pretty girls doing jumps and stuff, but the strain we put on our ankles and knees and feet, the types of turns we do...It’s like football! I’ve got a broken pinkie and a pulled hamstring right now, and I’ve broken my nose twice.

Did someone drop you?

No, we were doing a dismount, and a girl’s elbow smacked me in the nose. It was bad.

Describe the scene in your locker room.

There’s a lot of dancing and being silly. Sometimes there are pranks, like we’ll hide each other’s uniforms or take really embarrassing photos of each other. They’re things that would be stupid to everyone else but are funny to us.

Do you all go out together?

Absolutely—we’re like a group of sisters. We have sleepovers…Last year we all got hotel rooms and then went to this place that had bull riding. It’s like any night out with your friends.

What makes a Redskins cheerleader number one?

It’s not just one thing. You’ve got to have the dance factor and the glamour and the approachability.

You sure? We bet guys are scared of you.

I’d like to think I’m approachable, because I’m easy to talk to. I mean, I’m not a B-I-T-C-H.

And your spelling is impeccable! How should a guy get your attention?

By not coming on too strong. And have a sense of humor. I’m kind of a dork, and I’m super sarcastic, so I need someone who can battle right back with me. A little teasing is always good.

Do you have any cheering rivalries?

Well, just because the Redskins and the Cowboys are rivals, I guess our rivals would be the Dallas cheerleaders.

Could you outcheer them?

We’ll battle them. Bring it!

You’re only 20 years old, yet you’re a veteran on this squad.

Yeah, it’s my fourth year. I made the team when I was 17 and still in high school. I could cheer for 10 years and still be younger than most people on the team.

Human pyramid: top or bottom?

Bottom, because other girls are smaller and I’m strong.

How does that strength come in handy outside the stadium?

I’m a great golfer. I don’t know my handicap, but I can hit 250 yards. My dad has been golfing since he was a teenager and tried out for the pros. He got close, but then he had kids.

So you basically destroyed his dreams.

Yeah, I feel bad, but we still golf together. I also have a lot of guy friends who are like, “You can’t beat me,” and I just say, “Watch.” I’ve never gone golfing on a date, but I’d like to—and I would never let him win.

Besides guys you can crush on the golf course, what’s your type?

I like a guy who’s cultured and knows about a lot of different things. And he’s gotta be stable.

Speaking of stability, do you have any crazy fans?

There are some that show up to all of our appearances, and they message us on Facebook and know way too much about what we do. Like, they’ll talk about the bras we wear with our uniforms and inappropriate stuff like that. A couple of times we’ve had to get security to tell them they’re getting a little too close for comfort.

Where’d you learn to flip like that?

My parents bought us a trampoline for Christmas one year, and all my guy friends used to come over and do flips. I always wanted to be able to do whatever the guys did, so I trained myself. The hard part is conquering the fear, because you’re about to jump backward and flip through the air, so it’s mind over matter.

Would you consider yourself a tomboy?

As a kid I was always up for extreme sports, like wakeboarding, surfing, skateboarding. I wanted to try everything, and I always wanted to do better than the boys. But I’m such a girly girl in other ways, so I’d say I’m both. I’ll do anything that gives me an adrenaline rush, but my girly side loves dance and fashion and watching reality TV.

What kind of romantic move would make you cheer for a boyfriend?

Just being thoughtful. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant, either. My boyfriend knows that I love longboard skateboards and that I hadn’t ridden one since I was 12, so he bought us a pair so we could ride down the beach together. I think that’s the best.

How can a guy get a girl to don a cheerleader uniform in the sack?

Compliment her body. Tell her she’s beautiful. All that positive stuff will make her feel comfortable and good about herself. And then pick out a uniform you want to see her in.

Is there anything special you like to see guys wear?

I like anybody that’s really stocky with a uniform. Football players, army guys. Cops are sexy, too.

You’re a registered dental assistant. How do your cheering skills come in handy in the office?

We get a lot of patients who are super nervous and scared, and I’m really perky and can get them to calm down and make them feel comfortable.

You must have a pretty strong stomach to be able to dig in people’s filthy mouths.

Nothing skeeves me out. I see a lot of gross stuff in oral surgery, like a cyst being cut out of someone’s mouth. The weirdest thing, though, is seeing dentures. Old people just take them out and hand them to you.

Have any other special talents?

I can speak Spanish. I’m Puerto Rican, and even though I’ve always lived in Jersey, I had to learn how to speak English in first grade. My mom put me into a bilingual class because I’d been speaking only Spanish to that point.

What’s it like right before a game?

It’s madness. We have rehearsal just before game time, so we’re pretty sweaty, and we’re drying our hair and curling it, putting on mascara, fighting for the mirrors.

What’s your style when you’re not cheering?

I’m not really a girly girl. I never wear makeup—just ChapStick and eyeliner. I’m pretty straightforward.
