Inside ‘Dismaland,’ Banksy’s Nightmarish, Dystopian Disney Land

This is not the happiest place on earth.

For weeks, rumors  have swirled that mysterious artist Banksy was building a sinister, dystopian Disney Land in a derelict seaside lot in the British resort town of Weston-super-Man. On Thursday, “Dismaland” finally opened its doors.

The nightmarish park is, in part, a scathing critique of Disney Land. “Are you looking for an alternative to the sugar-coated tedium of the average family day out?,” screams the Dismaland promotional website. “Or just somewhere a lot cheaper? Then this is the place for you. Bring the whole family to come and enjoy the latest addition to our chronic leisure surplus.”

But it’s also, at its heart, an exhibition for the bizarre works of more than 50 artists from around the world, including Damien Hirst, Caitlin Cherry, Mike Ross, and others. According to Colossal, Banksy is also showing 10 works of his own.

If you want to check out Dismaland with your own eyes, book your tickets now: the park is open to the public from August 22 through September 27th. For what it’s worth, Pussy Riot and Massive Attack are playing a show there on September 25th. So don’t delay: the world’s most alarming family vacation is just a click away.
