Three disgraced scientists and their buddy become heroes by destroying an otherworldly menace which threatens the earth, embarrassing the authorities in the process. Sound familiar? Seventeen years ago, Ivan Reitman used this formula to give the world his masterpiece, Ghostbusters, and this summer he gives us the not-quite-masterful Evolution.
In Evolution, an extraterrestrial-housing meteorite crashes in the Arizona desert, the aliens evolve rapidly on earth, and a wacky team of scientists tries to stop them. The team consists of Dr. Ira Kane (David Duchovny, essentially lampooning everything he did on X-Files), professor and womens volleyball coach Harry Block (Orlando Jones, the 7 Up guy), Dr. Allison Reed (Julianne Moore, here making a successful transition from drama to Police Academystyle physical comedy), and failed firefighter Wayne Green (Seann William Scott of Dude, Wheres My Car?).
The movie rolls along smoothly without getting bogged down in trivialities like, say, character development or serious actingand be thankful: The last time someone tried to combine asteroids and serious acting, we were stuck with Armageddon.
