The road trip is a hallowed collegiate tradition that ranks with raging keggers, beer goggles, and exam-cramming. Not surprisingly, the route the new bad-taste comedy Road Trip takes is a familiar one filled with horny heroes, penis jokes, and—thankfully—plenty of nubile young women baring their knockers. Despite some hearty belly-laughs, the whole thing eventually just runs out of gas.

Thanks to the success of American Pie, sexed-up comedies are staging a comeback and, unless we’re lucky, odds are that Road Trip will be the best of this new batch. The “trip” of the title concerns Ithaca College student Josh’s (Breckin Meyer) attempts to intercept an incriminating video mistakenly sent to his childhood sweetheart in Austin, Texas. He and his brood of mischievous (and horny…did we mention horny?) friends hit the road and survive exploding cars, Viagra-jacked old men, and talking dogs along the way. The performances are all adequate, with DJ Qualls as an especially hilarious geek who looses his virginity to a human Jell-O mold and Amy Smart as a hot mama who makes everyone, well…horny.

A warning to those who might be swayed by the movie trailer: Tom Green, who plays an older (and horny) college student, has a very limited on-screen presence. His mouse-in-the-mouth scene is an instant classic, but unfortunately his bizzaro personality isn’t used enough, and the film suffers for it. If you’re strapped for cash this summer, wait to rent this movie and go see Gladiator instead.
