There's a 30-minutes stretch in the middle of Shooter where the story falls deader than one of Mark Wahlberg's targets. When it focuses on the military and sniping skills of Wahlberg's character, there are a bunch of impressive action sequences and brutal killings that kept us completely interested. But the overblown story and two-hour running time is practically unforgivable. It's retarded that a great director like Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) felt the need to jam completely obvious political messages—we get it, the current administration is loaded with fuck-ups—into a movie where a guy can kill from up to a mile away. Just give us a basic premise and start the killing. The making-of featurette had more bite than much of the plot, especially when the military advisor explains the technicality of sniping and how a bullet fired from a mile away would practically tear a human in half. That's the only stuff we wanted to see. Luckily, we pretty much did, since we're a perfect shot with our remote control. (Up to 30 feet away, yo!)

Watch our staffers go through the same sniper training as Mark Wahlberg!
