Director David Cronenberg psychoanalyzes through cinema in Spider, the story of a schizophrenic—played to perfect drooling and bumbling imperfection by Ralph Fiennes—who revisits his childhood stomping grounds to figure out why he’s so fucked in the head. The veteran cast of Miranda Richardson, Gabriel Byrne, and Lynn Redgrave helps compensate for the film’s plodding action that comes of its main character’s intense introspection. The DVD featurettes (each enjoying a clever title pun: “Weaving the Web,” “Caught in Spider’s Web”—stop us when you’ve heard enough) mostly address the film’s many varied points of view. Throughout the extras, Cronenberg rambles on about everything from the film’s flimsy financing to its true meaning…which he leaves open to interpretation, the bastard.
