Spider-Man Joins The Marvel Universe

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man might be swinging back into theaters as early as next year.

Spider-Man is joining Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man in the much-hyped Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios. The superhero’s next film installment is slated to be released on July 28, 2017.

The official press release stated that Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will “collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger.” (Read: Andrew Garfield’s not expected to come back.) The studios are discussing the possibility of cross-pollinating future Spider-Man films with other Marvel Universe characters. There’s also speculation that Spider-Man will make an appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War

Spider-Man’s long been a beloved Marvel character, but he’s also an incredibly profitable arachnid: The previous films grossed $4 billion worldwide and are Sony’s most commercially successful franchise. That partially explains why Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Inhumans were all pushed back

Elsewhere, in the DC Comics world, Ryan Reynolds is still regretting Green Lantern. Time to move on, buddy.
