Ewan McGregor's puzzled psychiatrist in Stay sums it up best: “I’m seeing things that don’t make sense. Nothing makes any sense!” Directed by Marc Forster (Monsters Ball, Finding Neverland)—whose credentials suggest he should know better—the convoluted and incomprehensible plot revolves around McGregor's desperate attempts to stop a young patient he inherited (Ryan Gosling) from committing suicide just before his 21st birthday. But as he's drawn further into a surreal world of smash cuts and flashbacks, nothing is as it seems and the story drifts aimlessly into that zone between living and dying. (A fact that doesn’t become crystal clear until Stay has already worn out its welcome.) For those who do stick around, the subconscious stress of having to be in a crappy movie clearly causes problems at home between McGregor's character and his girlfriend (and former patient) Naomi Watts. All three stars struggle under the lackluster direction and never get a beat on just what deep meaning lies beneath the surface—and neither will you. About 20 minutes into the jumbled mess that is Stay, you’ll be ready to go.
