Whiteout

Boss Hog’s easy-on-the-eyes frontwoman Christina Martinez knows how to attract attention. She posed bare-ass naked for the covers of both of the band’s first two albums, but for their latest, Whiteout, she no longer needs to resort to such hard-sell tactics. (Though, truth be told, we wouldn’t have minded.) Dripping with sleazy blues licks and plenty of sneering attitude, Whiteout rocks and rolls like the Stones stumbling out of a rundown bar an hour past closing time. Fuzz-toned guitar riffs, courtesy of Martinez’s husband, indie-rock provocateur Jon Spencer, propel the album, but thankfully, the avant-garde pretensions he brings to his main project, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, are notably absent. Apparently, Martinez knows how to keep her man in line.
