1. SHUT YOUR GRILL AND GET ON WITH IT
While you’re looking for the ideal job, work part-time for free somewhere in your field. This shows a potential employer that you’re proactive and smart, honing your skills. I toiled around doing a network job in L.A. for years, which eventually led to creating original shows for Howard Stern.
2. DIVERSIFY
The job market’s in the crapper, so there’s been a shift in expectations. If you say you’re a great editor, the first question people ask is, can you also produce, write, and direct? I have a hand in development as well as show-running the shows, so my time is split between the radio show at SiriusXM and the TV network at In Demand.
3. BREAK AND ENTER
Don’t be afraid to bend the rules! I spoke with a stuntwoman named Sara Holden who, without a credit to her name, snuck into the Stuntmen’s Association’s Christmas party to meet the important guys in her industry. She was later hired and is now a full-time Hollywood stuntwoman. She’ll be in the new Superman movie!
