Can Caroline Wozniacki Rebound at French Open After Rory McIlroy Breakup?

The Danish tennis star looks to shake off the wedding bell blues.

Last Wednesday when Rory McIlroy announced the breakup of his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, he created some drama in the world of golf—possibly for the first time in a season that’s been a snooze even to hardcore couch-sitting golf nerds. How would he respond under the bright tabloid spotlight? Well, he shot 66 on Sunday to win, climbing to sixth in the world ranking and making a case for people who speculated that he ended the relationship because he thought it was preventing him from winning golf tournaments.

That put the ball in Wozniacki’s court, so to speak. The former world number one, who dropped to 14th during the “Wozilroy” romance (seems like the relationship was detrimental to her game, too), decided to play through the heartbreak at the French Open. Which had to be tough: She’d already bought her wedding dress, and some of her bridesmaids, like Serena Williams, were in the field.

A deep run at Roland Garros might have taken the sting out of the past week for the crest-fallen Wozniacki, who according to reports was ready to phase out tennis and start a family with the Northern Irish golf star. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be: Wozniacki just lost a tough three-set match to Belgian Yanina Wickmayer (6-7, 6-4, 2-6). Still, with Rory out of the picture, maybe Caroline can refocus on tennis now and start dazzling us again with the powerful backhand and baseline game that had her on top of the tennis world.
