A Game Of Thrones Movie Is Happening

Winter is coming to a theater near you.

Update: Looks like the Daily Star is full of shit. More here.

Original post: Good news first: George R.R. Martin has pretty much confirmed that a Game of Thrones movie is in the works. But since nothing is perfect, there’s a catch: Martin won’t be a part of it.

“There will be a movie but I will not be involved,” Martin reportedly told the Daily Star at the HBO Emmys afterparty following the series’ big wins. “I have too much to do. That is something HBO and D.B. [Weiss] and David [Benioff] are dealing with. I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do…The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”

An unnamed “production insider” said the film would not necessarily pick up where the series left off: it could go further back in time -say, pre-Red Wedding — and therefore allow some now-dead characters to be involved.

“With theGame Of Thronesuniverse there is much rich material and no constraints on when that story will take place,” the insider reportedly said.

A small-to-big-screen adaptation would not be new for HBO: The premium cable network has previously made movies out of Sex and the City and Entourage; and before James Gandolfini’s untimely death, a Sopranos movie was rumored to be on the table.

Game of Thrones is expected to have three more seasons on HBO before it wraps up. Season 6, which is currently filming, will premiere in 2016.
