Get Your Drink On With Dale DeGroff’s Repeal Day Cocktail
The mixologist supreme stopped by our office to whip up a Prohibition-era Old Fashioned.
If you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed that we’re occasionally seen enjoying a drink or two. Or three. Or 365. As ardent booze fans, we can’t imagine what our forefathers were thinking when they introduced Prohibition in 1920. Really, guys – we’ve all vowed never to drink again when that hangover’s jack-hammering our eyeballs out of our faces, but wasn’t that a little drastic? On the other hand, of course, Prohibition gave us some pretty wonderful things, most notably, The Untouchables, the Simpsons episode Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment, and, best of all, the excuse to get completely hammered every year on the anniversary of its repeal. That’s what we did yesterday, because the anniversary is actually today and, frankly, we couldn’t wait that long. Did we mention we like drinking?
Because we like to class things up even while we’re drinking bathtub gin, we invited cocktail king Dale DeGroff to the office to make us some drinks. The following is his take on the classic Old Fashioned, using moonshine – the soon-to-be-released George Dickel No.1 white corn whisky, to be precise – instead of regular whisky because, duh, Prohibition. The recipe is below – enjoy it while eating a 5 cent hot dog and practicing your flapper girl pickup lines.
DALE DeGROFF’S HOLIDAY OLD FASHIONED
1.25 oz George Dickel No. 1
1 Dash DeGroff’s Pimento Bitters
0.25 oz Dale’s Cherry Liqueur
0.5 oz Simple syrup
2 Orange slices
Muddle a cherry and orange slice with the syrup and liqueur and the dash of bitters in a bar mixing glass. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass, add the whiskey and ice, and stir. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.
So have a good Repeal Day everybody. And remember, do as we do in our office and keep an eye out for that one sucker who always overdoes it.
