It’s no secret our friends across the pond in Ireland like a drink now and again. In fact, it may be that nation’s most distinguishing characteristic (have you ever been to New York on St. Patrick’s Day? Don’t. Unless you like your vomit in a shocking shade of kelly green). So perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised that councillors in Count Kerry are backing a plan that would allow for driving under the influence. . . in moderation. . . whatever that means.
To be fair, the government officials seem to have their hearts in the right place, as the plan is designed to allow residents in the county’s most isolated areas to drive after two or three drinks so they won’t succumb to loneliness-induced depression. Councilor Danny Healy-Rae told the TheJournal.ie that “a lot of these people are living in isolated rural areas where there’s no public transport of any kind, and they end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don’t want to take the risk of losing their license.”
Specifically, the measure is designed to allow the county’s older residents to drink and drive. Which makes an already loony notion seem even more so. “These people that are being isolated at present, all the wisdom and all the wit and all the culture that they had, the music and singing, that’s all being lost to the younger generation because these older people might as well be living in Japan and Jerusalem because the younger generation don’t see them at all anymore,” said Healy-Rae. ” These characters are being isolated now at home, and a lot of them are falling into depression.”
Far be it for us to criticize any measure that promotes the celebration of booze, but somehow we don’t see anything similar passing in the States.
