You Can Now Buy Janis Joplin’s Legendary Porsche
Her trademark ride is up for auction in December.
There are only two obstacles standing in the way of you owning Janis Joplin’s trademark pearl-white 1965 Porsche 365c 1600 Cabriolet, decked out in a flower power style mural. First you gotta get to New York, where it will be up for auction at Sotheby’s in December. And, you’ll need to have socked away at least $400,000, which is what the car is expected to sell for.
The car, which Joplin bought secondhand in 1968, was painted by Big Brother and the Holding Company roadie Dave Richards per Joplin’s specifications, and depicts the “History of the Universe” with images of butterflies, jellyfish, and Joplin with her band. According to Sotheby’s, Joplin owned the car until her death in October 1970. In the early nineties, the vehicle was restored and put on display at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where it’s been for the past two decades.
The Porsche is being sold by Joplin’s family as part of Sotheby’s “Driven by Disruption” sale on December 10th.
