Japan Is Airing an Insane New Series About Sex Terrorism

In this dystopian vision of Japan, telling a dirty joke carries a prison sentence. 

Imagine a world where making a double entendre could get you a few hours of hard labor. Even thumbing through the pages of a dirty magazine could get you thrown in jail. 

In ‘Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist’ (that’s a mouthful), that’s the kind of grim reality everyday citizens of Japan face. There’s no Deez Nuts jokes here, because as soon as you open your mouth to say anything dirty, you’re punished for any sort of perceived immoral behavior. All citizens are forced to wear devices known as Peace Makers that analyze spoken words and gestures for any kind of lewd content. Big Brother is always watching in this hilarious and raucous anime series, and it has to be seen to be believed.

Currently appearing on Funimation as the episodes air in Japan, ‘Shimoneta’ is a unique look on the dystopian future genre, taking an extreme approach to sexual censorship. When an entire class of high schoolers have no clue about the machinations of pregnancy or how a baby is made, you know there’s a larger problem at hand, though. That’s why a revolution is brewing. A massive underground revolt created in the name of nudie mags…and basic human rights, of course. 

A woman wearing panties as a mask is a known sex terrorist, spreading off-color jokes and lewd comments everywhere she goes. Her name is Blue Snow, and one of her greatest pleasures in life is screaming obscenities at the top of her lungs. When she recruits do-gooder Tanukichi Okuma because of his sleazy upbringing for her terrorist organization, all hell breaks loose as Okuma is forced to perform crazy new tasks all in the name of telling the forces that be to screw off, or one of several other obscene expressions.

Sight gags and dirty imagery abound in ‘Shimoneta,’ and it’s a playful nudge at censorship and freedom of speech. It may not be the filthiest anime series out there in terms of sexual content, but it aims to be as indecent as humanly possible, with sexual gestures, plenty of finger-licking, and gratuitous crotch shots. It’s also perfect for an endless amount of GIFs that you’ll never be able to explain to anyone looking over your shoulder. 

If you’re looking for something a little more titillating than the typical anime fare, seek out ‘Shimoneta’ and count how many dirty jokes you can catch in each 23-minute episode. Then sit back and enjoy your freedom to make them in our society. Like the song goes, you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone.
