Kurt Russell Destroyed a 145-Year-Old Antique Guitar While Shooting ‘The Hateful Eight’

Oops.

While shooting The Hateful Eight, Jennifer Jason Leigh wasn’t the only one shocked after Kurt Russell suddenly snatched and smashed her guitar. The guitar in question was actually a priceless antique from the 1870s instead of one of the many replicas provided during shooting.

The guitar was on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum and was particularly valuable, apparently. Dick Boak, the museum director, says the guitar was insured for its purchase price, but it doesn’t reflect its value as an irreplaceable museum artifact.

The 145-year-old instrument was accidentally destroyed because of “miscommunication.” Apparently, Russell wasn’t told that the guitar he was destroying with immense pleasure was a real one.

“Well, somehow that didn’t get communicated to Kurt, so when you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer’s reaction is genuine,” Mark Ulano, the film’s Academy Award-winning sound mixer, told SSNInsider.

The museum isn’t that miffed, however: Ulano said the Martin Museum representatives only asked two questions after the incident. “‘Do you need another one and can we please have all the pieces to display in our museum?’”
