Marc Maron Talks Drugs, Porn, and Zombies in New Stand-Up Special

With the Netflix film Thinky Pain, the podcast God bears his soul – cringingly.

We love Marc Maron. His WTF podcast is the best in the game. (Check out last week’s interview with Joey Diaz. We didn’t even know who Joey Diaz was, and our minds were blown.) His recent memoir, Attempting Normal, was full of hilarious humiliation. And his sharp IFC series, Maron (which is returning for a second season next year), got stronger as it went along. So how the hell did the newly 50-year-old comic find time to film a new stand-up special? Well, whatever the answer, we should all be glad he did. Released today on Netflix, Thinky Pain shows Maron at his most neurotic, brilliant best.

His recent string of professional successes has done nothing to dull his humor, but maturity may have mellowed Maron a bit. While not as political or angry as he used to be, Maron’s seemingly casual but always provocative (and admittedly unprepared) performance touches on subjects like the years he wasted to drugs, his obsession with vinyl and tube amps, porn, body dysmorphia, and the impending zombie apocalypse. Often perched on a stool, and performing for an intimate crowd at New York’s Poisson Rouge, Maron’s newfound approach recalled Lenny Bruce in the ’60s, or Bill Cosby: Himself; sit-down comedy, rather than stand-up, but no less funny for it. The whole 90 minutes is worth your time, but in the meantime, check out this clip.
