Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is the First Album to Go Platinum 30 Times
It’s close to midnight and something platinum’s lurking in the dark.
Michael Jackson has been dead going on seven years now and yet his music is still breaking records from beyond the grave. It’s just been announced by The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) that his seminal chart-topping album Thriller is the first album in history to go platinum 30 times, making him, by far, the best-selling artist of all time, much to Taylor Swift and Adele‘s chagrin. To further clarify what a big deal this is, going platinum 30 times means that Thriller has racked up 30 million in sales in the U.S. since it’s release in 1982, with over 100 million sales worldwide and 1 billion total sales to his credit. That’s a lot of moonwalks.
Let’s revisit some of the album’s songs that have made it such an indelible classic.
