Sometimes a gift is a curse — like having mysterious special powers that make you a target of people who do not have your best interests in mind.
Such is the case of the little boy at the center of Jeff Nichols upcoming sci-fi drama, Midnight Special. The first trailer does not make it clear exactly what his powers are, but they are definitely of interest to a religious sect and what appears to be some kind of a government operation. Michael Shannon tries to protect his son by staging a kidnapping and going into hiding with him, but those in pursuit of his son will stop at nothing. Nichols described Midnight Special as a "sci-fi chase film," and it was inspired in part by John Carpenter's Star Man. It marks Nichols' second collaboration with Shannon, who starred in 2011's Take Shelter. Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst and Sam Sheppard also star.
Midnight Special opens in March 2016.
