Peter Berg’s dramatic retelling of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings, Patriots Day, has its first teaser trailer, and the harrowing real-life incident appears to have been given a tasteful cinematic treatment.

The bombing itself is downplayed, and the terrorist perpetrators are nowhere to be seen. Instead, the trailer pays tribute to the everyday Bostonians who courageously responded to the violence that killed three civilians and injured another 264.

Mark Wahlberg plays Boston Police Department Sergeant Tommy Saunders, John Goodman plays Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, J. K. Simmons plays Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, and Kevin Bacon plays an FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers.

We will see if the actual film does them justice on Dec. 21, when Patriots Day has its limited release, and on Jan. 13, when the film releases nationwide.
