First of all: Happy Birthday Davey! Today, on his 66th birthday, Ziggy Stardust surprised fans with the announcement of his first new album since 2003’s Reality, and released a new video to boot:
The Next Day marks the 30th LP of Bowie’s illustrious career, and based on the downbeat, Labyrinth-ian “Where Are We Now?” it definitely shows promise. Produced by Tony Visconti — who has worked with Bowie since 1969’s breakout Space Oddity — the album features 17 new tracks written and recorded in New York.
According to a press release by Columbia, his record label, “Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130m, not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary.”
Now, don’t get us wrong: we’re excited by this news. Few artists have a catalogue as strong as Bowie’s, who from the late ’60s to the early ’80s had about as epic a run as anyone in music history. The dude released 15 classic albums between 1969 and 1984! That’s insane. But in the ensuing three decades? Not so much, unless you’re a Tin Machine fan (note: Tin Machine has no fans) or have a soft spot for the rocker’s ’90s foray into industrial and techno music. But a decade without Bowie is a decade too long, so we’re not about to complain. But we’re also not going to get out hopes too high.
While Columbia announced that there would be no accompanying tour (or interviews for that matter) “Where Are We Now?” is already available for purchase on iTunes, while The Next Day (tracklist below) hits stores March 12.
