RIP James Avery: We’ll Miss You, Uncle Phil

We’re throwing ourselves out the front door in your honor.

If there’s one man we could always rely on for sound avuncular advice growing up, it was The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air’s Uncle Phil. That’s why we’re immensely saddened by the loss of actor James Avery, who died on Tuesday following complications from open-heart surgery on November 11. Although he was a classically trained actor with credits on everything from Hill Street Blues to That ’70s Show (and who, of course, voiced The Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), it was The Fresh Prince that made him a household name, and with good reason. We learned so much from Uncle Phil – for example, how to deal with unwanted house guests:

How to booty-bump:

How to tell a fat joke:

How to scare the pants off everyone in the room:

How to keep a straight face during important moments:

And, most importantly, to always keep your knees bent and your back straight when doing this to somebody:

Thanks for the memories, Uncle Phil.
