Ryan Gosling & Tag Heuer Made A Wild Car Chase Movie To Celebrate Carrera’s 60th Anniversary

Gosling channels his “Drive” car chase roots in a short film produced by “Bullet Train” director David Leitch.

Tag Heuer is taking full advantage of ambassador Ryan Gosling’s action/comedy acting chops in a new short film dubbed The Chase for Carrera—watch it above.

Helmed by Nash Edgerton and produced by Bullet Train director David Leitch’s 87 North studio, the cleverly meta mini-movie sees Gosling wrapping a stunt scene involving a jump through a hotel window. He’s then confronted by Saturday Night Live alum Vanessa Bayer as prop master Tammy, who demands that Gosling returns a Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph.

After some comedic banter, Gosling speeds off in—what else?—a 1980s-era Porsche 911 Carrera. In a clear nod to Terminator 2’s semi truck-dirt bike chase scene, Tammy hijacks a big rig, chucking the driver on to the pavement.

She eventually ends up sprawled across the 911’s roof, at which point it’s revealed that the pursuit is part of another movie. The director yells “cut,” another prop master emerges and demands return of the watch, and Gosling takes off again before a title card reading “The Race Never Stops” appears.

Tag Heuer makes multiple allusions to the rich racing history linked to the Carrera, the name itself taken from the notoriously dangerous Carrera Panamericana endurance race that was canceled in 1955 after only its fifth annual running.

The first of these references is elderly lady seen entering an apartment in the short film’s opening—her attire is an homage to that of Jacqueline Evans de López, a British-born Mexican TV and film actress who competed in every Carrera Panamericana race. Five more of these hidden references are featured throughout the five-minute short.

As for Gosling’s watch, it’s the latest Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph that the Swiss watchmaker debuted recently with a “glassbox” sapphire crystal dome covering the tachymeter scale. This one is specced with a signature blue dial and matching calfskin strap.
