Sneak Preview: Spike TV’s Scream Awards 2009

We muscled our way onto the red carpet and behind-the-scenes of Spike TV’s tribute to monsters, aliens, superheroes, and everything else that flies, shoots, squirms, or hatchets.

Just in time for Halloween, Spike TV collected a scary-good array of A-listers for Scream 2009, honoring the best in sci-fi, fantasy, comic books and horror. Premiering Oct. 27 at 10 PM, the award show managed to corral the likes of Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, Harrison Ford, and Johnny Depp—who presented the Rock Immortal award to ghoulish guitar legend Keith Richards.

Featuring sneak peek clips from upcoming flicks like Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, the shirtless/hairless werewolf epic New Moon, and the remake of the alien-invasion TV series V, the night was full of memorable moments, including Tobey Maguire giving the Comic-Con Icon award to Stan Lee, William Shatner needling JJ Abrams about excluding him from the Star Trek movie while accepting an award for it, and some amusing revelations from Justin Long (relating to a Princess Leia fantasy) and True Blood‘s Best Villain winner Alexander Skarsgard, noting that his inspiration was his “very evil” fifth grade wood shop teacher.

On the pre-show red carpet, we asked celebs what makes them scream, and got both typical and unexpected responses. Spiders make The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco, Dollhouse‘s Eliza Dushku and True Blood‘s Rutina Wesley shriek, though Wesley’s also admits that her husband has the same effect on her “in a good way.” For some guys, horror movies are the scream trigger—True Blood‘s Sam Trammell picked Let the Right One In, and Josh Hutcherson of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant found Paranormal Activity pretty scary. But real-world fears are worse, according to two guys we spoke to. “Bank CEOs, Wall Street, and Congress” scare Watchmen (and future Freddy Krueger) Jackie Earle Haley. As for Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, one word sends him diving under the covers: “Taxes!”
