He’s a hero, he’s a traitor, he’s an EDM star: Edward Snowden is many things to many people, and now he’s getting the Oliver Stone treatment. The first full-length trailer for Stone’s biopic Snowden finds Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing his best Snowden bass as the whistleblower who was willing to sacrifice everything to share government surveillance secrets with an American public that turned out to be pretty apathetic to the whole thing.

Snowden appears to be a narrative prequel of sorts to Citizenfour, Laura Poitras’ documentary that begins at her first encrypted communication with the former Booz Allen analyst. Stone’s biopic chronicles the beginning of Snowden’s espionage career, and appears to heavily feature his relationship with girlfriend Lindsey Mills (Shailene Woodley), who Snowden had to leave behind when he fled the country to escape prosecution. The two have since reunited in Russia, where Snowden has been granted temporary asylum.

Snowden opens on September 16.
