Throwback Thursday: March 2003 – Brooke Burns

Check out what we were up to in March of ’03. Don’t worry, we’ll leave out our middle school class picture.

Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we’re going back to March of 2003, when Brooke Burns made reality TV worth watching, Mya was a major R&B singer, and we wore thonged sandals.

Cover Girl: Brooke Burns

Where You’ve Seen Her: We blame the new millennium for bringing reality TV to life. Between teen moms, the Kardashian clan, and hoarders we never needed to know about, it’s hard to weed out the good from the bad. But in 2003, Brooke Burns made it pretty easy to choose. As the host of Dog Eat Dog, a stunt-filled competition in which contestants physically and mentally degrade each other for money (obviously!), it became much easier to welcome reality TV into our living rooms. But our favorite Brooke Burns move had to be a few years earlier, when she slung on that signature red one-piece for Baywatch. Those were the days.

Where She Is Now: Luckily Brooke can still be found on the small screen, and she still looks just like that. Most recently she’s starred in TV movies A Sister’s Revenge and Undercover Bride, and also made a few cameos in shows like Drop Dead Diva, CSI: Miami, and Miss Guided. Unfortunately for men everywhere, she recently tied the knot with Miracle director Gavin O’Connor.

Maxim Wear Must-Haves: Slidin’ Away

We get it – whenever the long winter months start winding down and temps near a craaazy high of 50 degrees, every Northeast resident with a pulse throws on a pair of shorts and hails the arrival of summer. But thonged man sandals is where the line should be drawn. Sure, our feet are more rank than a gym locker room and these breezy slip-ons might help with that, but in the year 2013 we’d rather die a fiery death than wear these.

Oh, Mya

Ok, we’ll admit it: we can’t even count how many time we watched the “Lady Marmalade” video when it first came out. But can you really blame us? With Christina Aguilera and Pink decked out in lacy lingerie, what wasn’t to like? But it was Mya, the R&B singer who got our attention with just a corset, who we couldn’t take our eyes off of. With a handful of albums under her belt and various acting cameos alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Nicole Kidman, it was clear the star was going far, Pumas or no Pumas. These days, the singer has taken herself out of the limelight. But with her impressive filmography and countless music videos, we have more than enough to remember her by.
