Throwback Thursday: September 2005

Check out what we were up to in September of ’05. Don’t worry, we’ll leave out our middle school class picture.

Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we’re going back to September of 2005, when Kelly Monaco was the only reason we tuned into Dancing with the Stars, Aziz Ansari wasn’t a household name, and Rachel Bilson played a high schooler we shamelessly salivated over.

Cover Girl: Kelly Monaco

Where You’ve Seen Her: The soap star and Baywatch babe turned us onto dancing when she debuted on ABC’s hit Dancing with the Stars in 2005. By the end of the season, Kelly rightfully earned her place as the first-ever winner with her professional partner Alec Mazo, proving that a swing of the hips can go a long way. We presume her fantastic wardrobe malfunction also had something to do with that ruling.

Where She Is Now: In 2012 Kelly took to the Dancing with the Stars stage for an all-star season, this time with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy, whom she later dated. Making it to the finals, Kelly finished in third place, losing to reality show babe Melissa Rycroft. Kelly’s also kept her 12-year gig playing Sam McCall on General Hospital and remains romantically unattached. Being that she dated major league baseball player Mike Gonzalez, we think we have a really, really good chance of making a successful move.

Stand-Up Spotlight: Aziz Ansari

Everyone knows Aziz Ansari as the swag-induced government employee Tom Haverford on NBC’s hit Parks & Recreation, but back in ’05 he was far from being a household name. The stand-up comic turned up in the issue’s comedy section, making us laugh and wonder about how he managed to stay under the radar for so long, what with his hilarious anecdotes about his blasphemous love for bacon. With so many unfunny comedians getting famous out there, we’re stoked that credit was finally given where it was actually due.

Endless Summer

In 2003 the quintessential teenage soap opera found its way into our newly procured TiVos: The OC. Revolving around a bunch of fucked-up rich kids who’ve had their fair share of ODs, love triangles, and unrealistic life traumas, the show was also not short of hot girls. Along with the stunning Mischa Barton and her pseudo-lesbian counterpart Olivia Wilde, there was Rachel Bilson, the hottest rich chick we’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing. Playing Mischa’s best friend Summer, we couldn’t get enough of her endearing, ditzy monologues and string-bikini wardrobe. Luckily the California beauty hasn’t strayed from the limelight, and can now be found back on primetime in Hart of Dixie.
