Sotheby’s The Great American Whiskey Collection just sold for $2.5 million, becoming the most valuable single-owner American whiskey collection ever sold at auction and the most valuable single-owner spirits auction ever held in New York.
More than doubling its low pre-sale estimate ($1.17–1.68 million), the sale “drew intense competition from determined collectors online, on the phones, and in the room for some of the rarest and most coveted Bourbon and Rye ever bottled, many of which set new auction records,” Sotheby’s shared in a statement. The white-glove auction, held at Sotheby’s global headquarters in NYC’s iconic Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, marked the first-ever live, single-owner American whiskey auction in the auction house’s history.
The covetable collection consists of 360 bottles organized into 320 lots, all sourced from a meticulously curated private cellar. This landmark event was a cornerstone of Visions of America, a week-long series of auctions and events celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary by highlighting American art, innovation, and craftsmanship.

Assembled over several decades by an unidentified private collector, the holdings feature an array of the rarest bourbon and rye whiskeys ever produced. The inventory includes numerous private labels, exclusive single-barrel releases, and historic bottlings that have become nearly impossible to find.
The top lot was a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 20 Year Old Single Barrel “Sam’s” (1982), which shattered records by selling for $162,500 (est. $70,000–100,000), making it the most valuable bottle of American whiskey ever sold at auction. Hailed as one of the greatest bottles of Kentucky bourbon ever produced, the “Sam’s” is also the highest-proof Van Winkle release in history, bottled at an extraordinary 133.4 proof.
The collection spanned production dates as far back as 1900. While the sale features notable bottles from Buffalo Trace, Michter’s, and Wild Turkey, it is anchored by exceptional examples from Old Rip Van Winkle and Old Fitzgerald.
Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Global Head of Spirits, said: “This was a landmark moment for American whiskey. Breaking the record for the most valuable American whiskey collection ever sold is a testament to the extraordinary rarity and quality of this collection, as well as the passion and expertise of collectors worldwide. This exceptional auction has propelled Bourbon and Rye into a new stratosphere of desirability.”

Representing the strongest lineage of the Van Winkle family heritage ever presented at auction, the sale included single-barrel selections originally bottled for Sam’s, Binny’s, Blue Smoke, and Delilah’s. These releases were produced in extremely limited quantities, and because most were consumed shortly after their release, very few remain in existence today.

Other significant lots include a 1985 Van Winkle 18 Year Old Binny’s bottling and a 1950 Very Very Old Fitzgerald 18 Year Old Blackhawk, a private bottling for the Wirtz family.

The sale also featured four barrels of LeNell’s Red Hook Rye, which are among the most celebrated rye whiskeys in the world. The bottles were stored in the original owner’s custom-built home bar after being acquired over many years.
