Stuck in an airplane filled with germs, loud talkers, and rubbery chicken pilaf seems like the ideal setting for a romantic encounter, right? That’s our pessimistic reaction to the concept of AirDates, an app that helps [ahem] connect you with Ms. Right Now while traveling.

But our optimistic reaction is that, hey, sometimes magic does happen while jetting around. So why not use technology to help? Here’s how it works…

Before you get to the airport, you enter your flight details. At the gate, you update your preferences and scan for potential matches. Then while aboard, you just need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, to chat with your new (or old) friends without the need for an Internet connection.

How available you make yourself is up to you. It doesn’t have to just be about dating. And it doesn’t have to happen on a plane. Heck, it could be a fun way to find fellow partiers in a city you’re visiting.

Of course, if things go south, it can make for an awkward flight. But air travel is already kinda awkward. And if nothing else, at least this passes the time.
