When you take a woman out on a date, does she immediately order a cocktail or a glass of wine? Because I, as a woman, admit to doing so on basically every date I've ever been on.
And if you've ever wondered why, it's not because she just loves boozin,' nor is it because she thinks you're hella boring and desperately needs a drink to tolerate you. According to a new study published in the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, women drink on dates because you smell sexy and manly, and they subconsciously know they want to take a ride on that D train later.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of South Florida, where the same team previously found that men drank more alcohol when they were with women who were in the fertile phase of their menstrual cycle. You know, because you subconsciously want her to have your babies, and alcohol lowers your inhibitions.
In their follow-up study, the researchers wanted to test if this is true the other way around, so they recruited 103 women between the ages of 21 and 31, and gave them fragrance strips sprayed with either a male pheromone called androstenone, or plain water. Then, the participants were given two 12-ounce glasses of (non-alcoholic) beer.
The results of the experiment revealed that those who were give the pheromone “cologne” drank a tenth more than the women in the control group who only smelled the water. And even though one tenth is a relatively small amount, it's a significant difference in this particular case.
From this, the researchers concluded that natural male scents make women want to have a few drinks and get a light buzz going on, because there’s an automatic association between drinking and having sex, thanks our culturally conditioned ritual of getting turnt on dates, and because of what alcohol does to your brain.
To elaborate, when you drink alcohol, your cerebral cortex slows down, which is command central of your brain for complex though processes. Additionally, your orbitofrontal cortex also becomes depressed, which is all about decision making and mate preference. However, the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and pituitary — which work together to control your intrinsic sexual impulses — remain untouched, which is why we get super horny after a few drinks.
“We inferred that detection of male sexual scents, even in the absence of awareness, may instigate drinking because of the longstanding cultural association between alcohol use and sex,” the authors wrote in the report.
"Because of the centrality of sexual signaling to fundamental evolutionary/biological forces, these results indicate a potentially powerful influence on alcohol consumption that calls for continued investigation."
In conclusion, women drink around men because your masculine scent is intoxicating, and it makes them want to get in your pants even if they don't realize it. The end.
