Because the Chiron only makes 1,500 horsepower.

Bugatti‘s massive Veyron and Chiron hypercars are noted for their technical sophistication and staggering power, but they missed the chapter on the virtues of light weight when it comes to performance vehicles.

So Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann, fresh from his time as head of Lamborghini, decreed that a diet was in order for the Chiron. The result will be the Divo, a lighter-weight $5.87 million version of the Chiron named after Albert Divo, the French racing driver who won the famous Targa Florio mountain race twice for Bugatti.

The man himself, Albert Divo, at the wheel of the Bugatti Type 35 at the 1929 Targa Florio race in Sicily.

Bugatti says it will only build 40 Divos, which will be lighter than the regular Chiron and will produce more aerodynamic downforce for more cornering grip. “Happiness is not around the corner,” explained Winkelmann. “It is the corner. The Divo is made for corners.”

Look for more aerodynamic aids on the Tivo, in the manner of the diffuser beneath the Chiron Sport.

“With the Divo, we want to thrill people throughout the world,” Winkelmann added. “With this project, the Bugatti team has an opportunity to interpret the brand DNA in terms of
agile, nimble handling in a significantly more performance-oriented way.”

You’ll get a chance to see it for yourself and place an order at the ‘The Quail – A Motorsports Gathering’ on August 24 during Monterey Car Week, when the Divo will officially be unveiled.
