Back in 1918 there must have been something of a pickup truck Cambrian explosion, as first the Ford truck species appeared in July of that year, followed in late September by Chevrolet trucks.

With a century in the book, we can look back at the amazing evolution of the breed, as it evolved from a bare-bones cargo hauler and farm implement during World War I to the plus all-purpose people and equipment mover today.

“Today, the Chevrolet truck design studio is focused on purposeful design that creates personality and customization options for a wide breadth of truck customers,” said Rich Scheer, director of Exterior Design for Chevy Trucks. 

“Looking back on the past century of truck design, I realized that Chevrolet designers have been focused on the same goals since the very beginning.”

Maybe so, but the best-recognized Chevy truck design today remains the square-edged model of the 1970s and early ’80s. That truck’s influence is plainly visible in the crisp lines of the 2018 Chevrolet pickup and it wears them well.

Chevrolet designers gradually explored various contemporary style through the ’90s and 2000s before finally making an unapologetic return to its best-loved look.
