The Ferrari 275 Barchetta Racer Has a Tiny Body, a Big Engine, and a Huge Price Tag

This is the car you want to park inside your mid-century modern dream garage.

Have you ever been smacked in the face by a baby? It’s amazing how much strength such a tiny body can contain. The same concept, tiny, power-dense and pugnacious, undergirds the 1950 Ferrari 275S/340 America Barchetta that’s soon coming up for auction at Monterey. Scaglietti’s sinuous body is wrapped over a big, 4.1-liter V12, making this tiny terror a formidable entrant into historic races like Mille Miglia and the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge, both of which the car has run. This wee racer is certified by Ferrari Classiche as a top automobile, and has been meticulously kept throughout years of hard racing. It’s expected to fetch at least $8 million before fees—keep your hopes as low as the Barchetta’s front valance.  [All Photos: Darin Schnabel/ RM Sothebys]
