The mighty Ford F-150 Raptor is getting close to its triumphant return to showrooms in the fall, with the debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit of the four-door crew cab version of Ford’s Baja basher. This roomier version of America’s most popular truck joins the previously shown extended Super Cab model, so it’s possible to take the whole family along on punishing desert treks.

Ford says its latest off-road monster weighs in 500 lbs. lighter than the original factory Baja racer, and that its EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine will out muscle the old truck’s 411-horsepower 6.2-liter V8. Exact numbers, however, are not yet final.

“F-150 Raptor means superior off-road capability, from rock crawling to sand running,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance. “With the addition of SuperCrew, F-150 Raptor customers can leave the pavement behind – without sacrificing comfort and space.”
